Meet Dr. Smith
Board Certified Plastic SurgeonRead Bio
Each year, the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) releases statistics for the past year. A proud ASPS member himself, Dr. Smith always looks forward to the release of these statistics. The statistics for 2015 affirm what Dr. Smith sees in his own Edina practice—plastic surgery continues to be a popular choice for both men and women. Nearly 2 million surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in 2015 alone—representing an increase of two percent over 2014.
Breast enhancement continues to be a patient favorite. With well over 279,000 procedures performed, breast augmentation once again topped the list. As for implant choice, 80 percent of women opted for silicone over saline. Breast lift surgery (mastopexy) continues to grow in popularity as well, with a seven percent increase in the last year, and an 89 percent increase since the year 2000.
All with dropping numbers, the two, three, and four spots were taken by long-popular procedures. Even with a 37 percent decrease since 2000, liposuction took the second spot with more than 220,000 procedures. Similarly, over the past 15 years, nose surgery has seen a 44 percent decrease, but still remains the third most performed surgical procedure. Despite the decrease, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) still managed to come in fourth with over 205,000 procedures performed.
Body contouring procedures have become more popular as men and women look to refine their figures. Up by nine percent, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) rounded out the top five—showing a promising 104 percent increase in the past 15 years. Other body contouring surgeries also demonstrated an astounding increase in the number of procedures performed. Most notably, the lower body lift and the upper arm lift (brachioplasty), with an unheard of increase of 3,973 and 4,959 percent respectively.
While statistics are fun, Dr. Smith knows the true measure of success is our patient’s happiness. Dr. Smith is here to help guide and advise you as you decide what cosmetic procedure is best for you.
