Breast Augmentation

As a woman gets older, there are several factors in life that cause changes in her physical appearance. One of the biggest concerns for many women is the loss of breast volume or shape that often occurs over time, whether due to pregnancies, weight fluctuations, or aging. Breast implants have proven an extremely rewarding solution for many women who want to feel like themselves again when they look in the mirror. Restoring natural feminine beauty and self-
confidence is our goal with breast augmentation procedures. Before & after images of a real patient who underwent a breast augmentation by Dr. David Smith in Edina

Breast Augmentation in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MN)

At Smith Plastic Surgery, we offer women a variety of options for their breast augmentations. This way, no matter what your goals are–whether it’s to restore your pre-baby body or enhance the natural size of your breasts–you will be able to achieve your own desired outcome with Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith performs breast augmentation surgery as an outpatient procedure.  You go home with your driver after surgery.  From the start of your consultation to the day you see your final results in the mirror, your surgery will be carefully tailored to meet your specific needs. We use the extra highly cohesive silicone (gummy bear) implants for safety and comfortable general anesthesia. The goal of our breast augmentation surgery is to provide you with results that look as beautiful as they do natural, so you can wear all of your favorite clothes in confidence and love your look.

Here is a video of the gummy bear implants we use.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

Breast augmentation for silicone implants at Smith Plastic Surgery costs $5500.   This is almost always the total complete fee unless breast lift surgery is added.  This may be paid by any major credit card, debit card or cash. We can accept the majority of the fee through a care credit card that allows up to 3 years to pay for the surgery with the rest paid by cash or another credit card. Please read our financing/scheduling page to save your valuable time and avoid wasted effort.

What Implants Are Used?

For safety and shape we use only premium smooth round non textured extra-cohesive silicone implants. (We have never used textured silicone implants which have been withdrawn). We never use saline implants which bottom out, ripple, dimple and eventually suddenly deflate needing expensive repeat surgery.  Very disappointing.  The new implants are so much better.

Textured vs. Non-Textured Implants

Textured implants were recalled in early 2019 because bacteria tend to hide in the textured surface which causes long-term inflammation and chronic problems. We have never used textured silicone implants.  There are no expiration dates for the implants we use.

We do not charge excess fees to impress. The modern silicone implants are like a gummy bear candy with a soft semi-solid silicone gel fill for greater safety and improved shape. This implant is very loosely referred to as a “gummy bear” implant.  Anesthesia and facility charges are included.

When Is The Procedure Performed?

Dr. Smith nearly always is booked out about a month after payment and scheduling.   He performs breast augmentation surgery usually on Wednesdays with a follow-up dressing change the next day. By Friday, our patients are
driving to the grocery store or running errands. By Monday nearly all return to work without lifting restrictions.  This a quick recovery surgery.

If you are bringing a very young child to the free consultation be sure to bring another individual to help with childcare. We get great results with privacy and we are cost effective. Breast Augmentation Benefits

A desire for better cleavage, fuller breasts, increased self-confidence, and feeling great in figure-flattering clothing are some of the reasons women choose to have their breasts augmented. This surgery offers benefits for the following conditions:

  • Decrease in breast size and volume due to significant weight loss
  • Age-related changes in breast size and volume
  • Unflattering breast shape and size due to genetics
  • Asymmetrical or abnormally developed breasts
  • Feeling self-conscious due to the appearance of your breasts
  • Pregnancy-related changes to the breasts including lost volume, lost firmness, loose skin, flattening, and asymmetry

Breast Augmentation Candidates

You must be in good overall health to undergo breast augmentation. Additionally, you should:

  • Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
  • For best results preop weight should be close to ideal with a bmi of 30 or less.  (170# for most people)  It is possible to do surgery if bmi is less than 32 and otherwise completely healthy.  No smoking, alcohol, ibuprofen, amphetamine or any drugs 30 days prior to surgery.
  • Have enough natural breast tissue to cover the implant

Breast Augmentation Incision Locations

Your anatomy, choice of implant material, and goals for the procedure must be considered when selecting an incision type.  Dr. Smith will recommend the one that best accomplishes your aesthetic goals:

  • Inframammary incisions: These are made in the natural folds under your breasts, where the scar is hidden discreetly by swim suits and clothing.  Usually the best choice for symmetry.  They also help preserve nipple sensation.
  • Periareolar incisions: These incisions are made around the borders of your nipple to help conceal the scars. These incisions heal slower.
  • Transaxillary incisions: These incisions are made under in the under-arm area.  These incisions heal very well but do not work well if you have extra loose skin following pregnancy.  In that case incisions near the crease give a nicer shape.

Breast Implant Placement Options

Choosing the right option for your breast implant placement really involves two choices: sub-glandular placement (over the chest muscle) or sub-muscular (under the chest muscle).

  • Subglandular: This places your implants beneath your breast glands but above your chest muscle.
  • Submuscular: women who have less existing breast tissue or who want a gentler, softer curve from their upper chest to their breasts. Your implants will be placed placed behind your breast tissue and partially behind your chest muscles.  Most popular by far for a natural appearance.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Your choice of breast implant size, type, placement, and incision location will determine the specifics of your breast augmentation surgery, but all procedures follow the same basic steps and are performed on an outpatient basis.

  • You will be given general anesthesia and made comfortable in our surgery center.
  • Dr. Smith will make the incisions and place your implants according to your discussions during the consultation.
  • Dr. Smith will close the incisions. The entire procedure should take about one hour.
  • A nurse will monitor you until you’re ready to be driven home.

What To Expect During Recovery

After the procedure, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze and an elastic bandage to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal. Dr. Smith will go over post-surgery instructions and provide prescriptions for any medications necessary. In addition to following post-operative instructions for caring for the incision site and keeping your breasts supported, some activity restrictions apply. It may take a couple of weeks for swelling to subside, but the results of your breast augmentation will be noticeable immediately.

Dr. Smith recommends resuming light activity levels, such as walking, as soon as you feel up to it in order to facilitate blood flow and proper healing. You should be able to return to work by the Monday or Tuesday following surgery. Within approximately one month, you will be able to resume most normal activities, including most forms of exercise.

Over the next months, your incision lines will continue to fade. You will have follow-up appointments with Dr. Smith the morning after surgery and 3 or 4 weeks later.   Schedule a Breast Augmentation Consultation
