Meet Dr. Smith
Board Certified Plastic SurgeonRead Bio
Many men and women struggle to lose their excess fat beneath the chin despite eating healthy and exercising regularly. Kybella is a non-surgical injectable solution for treating submental fat and reducing the appearance of a double chin. Dr. Smith performs Kybella submental fat reduction treatments at his plastic surgery practice in Edina. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Smith administers each Kybella injection himself to ensure his patients’ safety and beautiful outcomes.
Kybella is formulated with deoxycholic acid, which is FDA approved for treating submental fat. Once injected, Kybella works to kill the targeted fat cells so they can be naturally minimized from your body(*).
Kybella can help to achieve a beautifully sculpted chin and jawline without the need for surgery. You should start seeing results from your Kybella treatment in just one month.
Double chins can form due to fat deposits weighing down the skin, or they can form from excess, sagging skin. If fat deposits are the cause of your double chin, Kybella is perfect for you.
However, if your double chin is more a factor of sagging, loose skin, you’d be better off having Dr. Smith perform a neck lift to remove the excess skin and tighten the underlying support tissue.
During your consultation, Dr. Smith can judge if Kybella would work for you or if your issue is more due to sagging skin.
The maximum number of Kybella treatments approved by the FDA is six. Whether you need all six is your call. Some patients see the results they seek in two to four Kybella injection sessions. In clinical studies to gain FDA approval, 59 percent of patients opted to have all six treatments. Treatments need to be spaced at least four weeks apart.
As mentioned above, in its approval the FDA cleared a maximum of six Kybella treatments. That doesn’t mean you have to have all six. Some patients like what they see after just two or three sessions. How much you use will be unique to you. That said, Kybella is priced by how much is used. You’ll have a different cost if you use all six sessions versus someone who has only three sessions. When you come in and Dr. Smith sees if Kybella is right for you, he will discuss what your potential costs will be per session.
Unlike dermal fillers or Botox, there is a recovery period of sorts with Kybella. There is some pain associated with the 15-20 tiny injections involved in a session. That can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
Most patients will have swelling. The amount of swelling is related to the amount of fat the patient has under their chin, as the swelling is due to the deoxycholic acid reacting with the fat cells. This swelling usually peaks after one day and goes away within 48 hours. But in some patients, the swelling lingers for up to three weeks. The first injection session involves the most swelling.
The injected areas will develop some numbness that can last for up to two months. There can also be some tenderness to the touch in the area.
The fat under your chin will go through a change. First, it will become more like gel after three or four days. Then it hardens. You can feel this, but others cannot see it. The solidified fat then breaks into bits and the body’s immune system goes about disposing of it over the next couple of months.
It takes some time for Kybella to attack and get rid of the fat. Results are not immediate. Most patients see their results at around four weeks. These results are permanent, as the fat is gone for good.
The number of treatments required to achieve your desired outcome will be discussed with Dr. Smith during your consultation. We get great results with privacy and cost-effectiveness.
