Dr. Smith was born and raised in South Minneapolis and lives there now. After high school, Dr. Smith attended Minnesota Outward Bound Survival School, earned his private pilot’s license, and completed a Twin Cities Marathon.
He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Philosophy B.A. in 1972 and an M.D. degree with Alpha Omega Alpha high honors in 1976. He was awarded a DeWitt Wallace, Readers Digest Traveling Medical Fellowship to volunteer in Madagascar in the spring of 1976. He assisted in surgery and clinics for ten weeks at the Ejeda Lutheran Mission Hospital near Tulear, Madagascar, and at the Manambaro Lutheran Mission Hospital near Fort Dauphin, Madagascar.
To get there he backpacked for six weeks through parts of Africa, including Senegal, Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria, Zaire Congo, South Africa, and Tanzania, where he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. He concluded this adventure by traveling back from Madagascar through Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, the Sahara desert, and down the Nile to Cairo, Egypt, then through Europe back to the U.S.
Dr. Smith completed nine years of surgery residency. He finished General Surgery at the University of Wisconsin in 1982, Plastic Surgery at the University of Tennessee in 1984, and a Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mecom Microsurgery Institute in Houston Texas in 1985.
Dr. Smith passed his General Surgery boards in 1983 and his Plastic Surgery boards in 1986. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota from 2000 to 2005, and an organizer and the treasurer of the Minnesota Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has made several trips to Madagascar and New Guinea to perform volunteer reconstructive surgery for cleft lips and palates, hand injuries, and burn scars.
Dr. Smith loves being a plastic surgeon helping make people’s lives significantly better. He feels blessed to be helpful. Beside Plastic Surgery, his interests are wife, kids, church, French Brittany Spaniel dogs, gardening, baking bread, brewing cider and beer, family history, sailing Lake Superior Apostle Islands and northern Minnesota near Ely Minnesota. Family is the most important part of life.
