Dr. Smith was born and raised in South Minneapolis and lives there currently with his wife. Two sons are at college. After high school he attended Minnesota Outward Bound Survival School, earned his private pilot’s license and completed a Twin Cities Marathon. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Philosophy BA in 1972 and an MD degree with Alpha Omega Alpha high honors in 1976. He was awarded a DeWitt Wallace, Readers Digest Traveling Medical Fellowship to volunteer in Madagascar, Africa, Spring of 1976. He assisted in surgery and clinics for ten weeks at the Ejeda Lutheran Mission Hospital near Tulear Madagascar and the Manambaro Lutheran Mission Hospital near Fort Dauphin, Madagascar.
Traveling to Madagascar he back packed six weeks through Western Africa (Senegal, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Nigeria), the Congo Zaire, South Africa, Zanzibar, and Tanzania climbing Mount Kilamanjaro. Return travel from Madagascar was via Kenya, Ethiopa, Khartoum Sudan, and then over-land by train crossing the Sahara desert and by river boat down the Nile through Egypt to Cairo, then through Europe. Life’s great adventure.
He completed nine years of surgical residency training, finishing the University of Wisconsin – General Surgery 1982, University of Tennessee – Plastic Surgery
1984, and a Microvascular Surgery Fellowship at the Mecom Microsurgery Institute in Houston Texas, May 1985.
Dr. Smith passed his General Surgery boards in 1983 and his Plastic Surgery
boards (current) in 1986. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota 2000 – 2005 and an organizer and the treasurer of the Minnesota Society of Plastic Surgeons. He has made several trips to Madagascar and New Guinea performing volunteer reconstructive surgery for cleft lip and palate, hand injuries and burn scars. Beside Plastic Surgery interests are wife, kids, church, brittany spaniels, lawn care, cooking, baking bread, home brewed cider and beer, family history, sailing Lake Superior’s Apostle Islands and Northern Minnesota near Ely. Family and kids are most important.
